How to get the smell out of new luggage.

First, make sure any packets of silica gel or other drying agents are removed from the bag and thrown away. Make sure your pets or kids can't get to them—it's dangerous to eat them.

Next, leave the luggage open on a sunny porch or other airy room, preferably where you don't have to smell it. Once the major odor is gone, you have some choices. For an unscented odor removal, you can put a freezer-style box of baking soda in the bag and close it up for a couple of weeks. Alternatively, pack the bag with cedar chips usually made to go in closets; your favorite scented soap; or, bags of dried lavender, roses or other herbs like spearmint, from the health food store.
