Eye shadow fads come and go every season, but if you just want an elegant, day-to-day look, go with eye shadows in neutral tones.
We're talking super-subtle earth tones—beige, taupe (which is a grayish-beige), cream, maybe the occasional something verging on brown or a smoky, nearly-not-there purple. If you have green eyes, you can wear nearly any neutral color and get away with it, because you've got warm tones (yellow) and cool ones (blue) in your eyes. But this should also be mediated by the consideration of your skin color. With a cool skin tone (bluish or pink undertones), even your eye shadows should stay in the cool range. Warm skin tones may go more with brownish shades and less with the blue-gray or slate shades. But you can experiment: sometimes brown eyes look wonderful outlined with a deep blue-gray pencil. A pale pink shadow can sweep across the eyelid for nearly any color eye and if it's subtle enough, looks great.
Evening wear and club dates can make a gal more playful with her makeup. You can get a lot brighter than you'd usually wear to work; even add some sparkle. For partying, it's fun to forget the daytime elegance of neutrals and play with blues, greens, purples and gold or silver. Green eye shadow might be nice used as eyeliner, with blue shadow above it. Purple and make a nice liner-shadow combination too. Brown eyes can do well with some green shades, especially if those brown eyes also have flecks of gold or green in them already. Blue eyes look outstanding with bright violet shadow.
